How to Prepare Your Home for Cold Temperatures

If you can prepare yourself and your family (yes, including your pets!) for the cold, it shouldn’t be too difficult to prepare your home much the same way.

Do you feel that? The brisk wind is picking up. It’s definitely sweater weather, and it’s also probably a good idea to bundle up. If you can prepare yourself and your family (yes, including your pets!) for the cold, it shouldn’t be too difficult to prepare your home much the same way. Please follow along as we give you some great advice on how to do this!

Get Your Furnace Inspected ASAP

Before doing anything else, schedule a furnace inspection. By getting this step out of the way as soon as possible, you can rest assured that your home’s heating system won’t be interrupted. Furnaces can be powered either by gas or electricity. Regardless of the power source you rely on, it’s still a good idea to install a backup generator if you don’t already have one. Emergency repairs in bad weather and freezing conditions are much more difficult and could cause the costs of such a project to skyrocket.

Deal with the Nearby Trees

Another tip we have for you is to pay attention to the condition of your trees. In other words, you’ve got to trim the trees on your property. Ordinarily, this wouldn’t be a problem, but falling leaves can clog your gutters and downspouts. Likewise, heavy amounts of ice and snow can cause tree limbs and entire trees to fall over. Not only can they damage your home and vehicle, but they can also damage your neighbor’s home and vehicle. Don’t let that happen to you!

Insulate Your Water Pipes

Protecting your plumbing against the cold doesn’t have to be difficult. One simple way to prevent them from bursting is by insulating them. This method works for indoor pipes and outdoor plumbing. Even after you have wrapped up your water pipes, make sure everyone knows how to find and access the water shut-off valves. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Use Draft Blocks to Full Effect

Draft blocks are a great way to stop warm air from escaping your home. Plus, it keeps cold drafts from infiltrating your home due to compromised seals on doors and windows. Otherwise, you’ll be facing radical increases in your energy bills while shivering your way through the rest of the fall and winter! Door draft blocks are highly effective, and you can make them even resilient by caulking and weatherproofing your home as well.  One last thing: be sure to bring in outdoor cushions and weather-sensitive furniture!
