Working from Home: 3 Important Questions to Ask about Home Offices

Either way, your home office can also double as a flex room in and of itself – it can be a hobby room or a studio where you can pursue creative hobbies when you aren’t working.

Working remotely has been a rising trend, but at least for the past five months, it has never been this important. When you get the chance to work from home, it means you can spend more time with your family while still having an opportunity to get all of your work done. One way to do that is to set aside space in your custom home to function as a home office. Here are some questions to help you decide how you want to design them

How Much Space is Necessary?

A home office is a type of extra room, alternatively known as a bonus room or a flex room. If you know that you want to integrate it into the design of your custom home or add it onto your existing home, then the first consideration to think about is how much room you need. Having one home office is great, but having two is fantastic. You could share an office with your partner, depending on how well you can acclimate to doing so. Even so, having multiple offices gives you someplace quiet to concentrate, even if you have noise-canceling headphones to use.

Can You Get By Using a Spare Bedroom?

The next question to ask yourself is, “can I convert a spare bedroom into a home office?” it’s easy to set up a spare bedroom as your home office, but you can also take steps to optimize your custom home design and its associated floor plan. You could have your custom home builder partner create a room that has shelving and cabinets but doesn’t have any closet space. You can also decide where the lights and the electrical outlets go, which is something you might not be able to do if you simply moved into a pre-fabricated home. You should also consider placing the home office on the first floor and control the placement of windows, lighting, built-in desks, cabinets, and so on. Either way, your home office can also double as a flex room in and of itself – it can be a hobby room or a studio where you can pursue creative hobbies when you aren’t working.

Is a Detached Home Office Worth It?

You could also consider adding a detached home office to your custom design. A micro-home might be what you need – a place to avoid distractions but still equipped with a kitchenette, a bathroom, and additional storage space as needed. It’s also a great place to have meetings or host clients when you need to, even if that isn’t in the cards right now.
