What You Need to Know About the Windows in Your Bathroom

You can’t replace your windows in the bathroom with the same process you used on the rest of the house…and there are specific reasons why.

Not all windows are created equal; there are a lot of factors connected to bathrooms that make windows a specific kind of issue. One of the biggest enemies of windows and their installation is moisture. As you probably know, keeping water away from the seams of your windows is vital for protecting them from water damage and warping. You can’t replace your windows in the bathroom with the same process you used on the rest of the house…and there are specific reasons why. Read on to find out what you need to know about bathroom windows.

Moisture

Bathrooms are the most humid areas of the entire house. Shower steam heavily affects the level of moisture in the air, but also, there is always some kind of water being used in bathrooms. Bathroom windows need to deflect moisture on the inside and outside of the wall, or water will destroy the wood and drywall. Ventilation is also very important for bathrooms, and it’s not always weather-permitting to crack them open. You need to make sure your bathroom has enough airflow to allow for moisture to dry, so there isn’t any sitting around window seems.

Design

Aside from aesthetics, windows must also be designed specifically with the bathroom in mind. Vinyl frames and trim are essential. They won’t rot or deteriorate like wood, which is usually an option when you install your windows. Also, do you want your windows to open, or are they simply for decoration? To prevent moisture buildup, it’s important to have at least one that opens to allow for good airflow.

Privacy

Placement, glass, and blinds are all very important to the privacy you’ll get from your windows. Since your bathroom requires privacy, this is a vital step. Privacy glass is decorative or opaque glass that prevents the ability to see through it. Vinyl blinds should also be the only material you should consider, for the same reasons regarding moisture. And placement may be a concern; above the shower or on the outside wall? That part is up to you.
