Kitchen Design Tips from your Maryland Custom Home Builders

Did you know that will spend literally years of your life in the kitchen? Between cooking, eating, cleaning, and just spending time in one of the best rooms in the house, you’ll spend a lot of time in your kitchen. When you’re ready to design your custom kitchen, you’ll want to create a space that you’re willing to spend a lot of time in and that can be enjoyed by the whole family; remember, though, you still need it to be functional and easy to use as a room for food preparation. So, what are some good ways to prepare for your kitchen design?

  • Have a good plan – This may sound obvious, but you need to really dig down deep into your plan. You can even make it a little bit unrealistic, since it’s just an idea. Write down all of the features that you KNOW you want in a kitchen and add some of the extras that you’d add if you could.
  • Consider practicality – You don’t want to move too far to get from your countertops, to your stove, and back to your refrigerator again when you’re cooking. Consider the easiest way to get from one to the other and make both cooking and cleaning easy projects. Also, put some serious thought into the materials (granite, stainless steel, wood, etc) that will work the best for your lifestyle and family needs.
  • Space and lighting – Kitchens are becoming more popular places to be in the home, not just for cooking. You want to make sure that there’s sufficient space for someone to be cooking while guests or family members can congregate in and around the kitchen; if you’re designing your own, make sure that it’s designed for more than one person to occupy. Small kitchens can be very frustrating. Lighting in the kitchen is also of utmost importance. You’ll need good overhead lighting for meal preparation and cooking.
  • Safety – Just as your kitchen needs to look good aesthetically, you also need to consider safety into the equation. If you have small children or you know that small children will frequently be in your kitchen, make a point to install ranges that are tall enough that they can’t reach and consider adding a playroom close enough that you can see, but far enough that your children will be safe.
