It’s World Environment Day on June 5th–Are You Ready?

In the spirit of such a wonderful day, we’ve decided to provide you with some tips that will make your home as environmentally free as possible.

June 5th marks the calendar with World Environment Day, which is a global holiday used to celebrate and protect the planet we live on. In the spirit of such a wonderful day, we’ve decided to provide you with some tips that will make your home as environmentally free as possible. Follow these steps to make sure you’re not doing more damage to the environment next week.

Turn off the AC when you can.

We covered this last week, but it’s always good to be reminded. Keeping your thermostat at 78 degrees this summer will save you money, and it also saves energy. Every little bit helps–if you’re able to feel comfortable in 78 degrees, go up to 80. Maybe do a weekly challenge, when you don’t use the AC at all. Hey, we used to do pretty good without it!

Install ceiling fans.

If you can’t stand being without AC this summer, installing ceiling fans is your next best option. It costs less to have a fan running than it does to have your AC constantly battle Maryland heat. It helps to keep heat from rising, also, so the floor above you won’t be as hot. This is an energy efficient alternative to keeping your windows open, which lets out what AC you may be using, and it keeps the air moving.

Move towards energy efficient fluorescent light bulbs.

If you haven’t already done this, you definitely should. Not only will you save money because of how long they last, you’ll also be using about a fourth of the energy a normal bulb uses. They’re just as bright, if not brighter. And they don’t generate any heat, so small rooms will definitely benefit! LED lamps are even more efficient, saving up to ten times more energy than fluorescent bulbs.

Start a compost pile.

This is a small pile you’ll create in your backyard, which consists of all decomposable material you dispose of during the week. It can include anything organic, which breaks down and eventually forms a very rich fertilizer. Don’t throw away your peels and your corn husks from your summer cook-outs. Make sure you’re recycling everything, even your organic waste.
