One of the best ways to keep warm once the weather outside cools down is to gather around the fireplace. It’s a wonderful place to sit and chat with your family over cups of cocoa before it’s time for bed. Fireplaces can be installed both inside and outside a home; in many cases, this fire feature will be a prominent part of outdoor living spaces like decks and patios. So if you are trying to decide if you need a fireplace for your custom home, then it might help to learn more about the different types available to you!

Wood-Burning Fireplaces
Wood-burning fireplaces are the most common variant of residential fireplaces; there’s a reason why the phrase “hearth and home” exists, after all. This fireplace makes the room’s ambiance better, especially after dark. If you know what hygge is, then you’ll be awash in its warm glow. While open-hearth fireplaces are iconic, they’re not as efficient when it comes to heating; meanwhile, enclosed fireplaces are surprisingly effective, so you might want to look in that direction instead.

Gas Powered Fireplaces
One advantage of a gas fireplace is that they burn their fuel more cleanly than their wood-burning counterparts. Direct-vented built-in gas-powered fireplaces produce yellow flames that mimic its wood-burning cousin, but you will need to have a chimney or pipe to let the smoke out. Ventless built-in fireplaces are more convenient, but you’ll see a blue flame instead.

Electric Fireplaces
You can also choose to incorporate electric fireplaces if you so desire. They are low-maintenance, and only need a convenient power outlet to connect to; that said, the flames they produce are only going to be for aesthetic purposes – they won’t emanate any heat.

Ethanol Fireplaces
Let’s suppose that you are interested in having real flames but don’t want the hassle of configuring vents. Alcohol-based fuel sources, such as ethanol, will give you the results you expect with one notable benefit – you won’t have to worry about chemical fumes or lingering smoke trails ruining the indoor air quality inside your custom home.

Alcohol Gel Fireplaces
Alcohol gel fireplaces are similar to the ethanol fireplace and are both ventless and easily-portable. They use gel fuel as their accelerant and since they rely on isopropyl alcohol you rest assured knowing that it will burn more cleanly.

What is a Pellet Stove?
Pellet stoves rely on wood pellets to warm up your custom home. Fill up the hopper for the pellet stove, and it is good to go. Plus, you can control it via your thermostat.
