Hygge is a Danish word that is connected to the concept of self-care and it can make you feel much happier – always important in these troubling times.
What Is Hygge?
In case you’re not sure how to say it, hygge is supposed to be pronounced as “hoo-gah”, and it lines up with feeling cozy or homey. Feeling cozy or homey is even more important now that it’s getting colder and you want to spend more time indoors as opposed to outdoors. Take notes from the Danish people who came up with the idea: focus on comfort, coziness, charm, and joy.
What Exactly Does It Mean?
Denmark is rated near the top of the list for happiest countries in the world – in 2019, it scored the #2 ranking on the World Happiness Report, only behind Finland. Simple pleasures are at the core of hygge, and you can infuse that ideal into the design of your custom home. Some of the elements you can use to increase the hygge-level of your home include atmosphere, equality, gratitude, harmony, togetherness, and shelter. Think of hygge much like zen, feng shui, or the simple factor of what sparks joy and what doesn’t. For example, sitting inside reading a book and sipping a cup of tea while it rains outside or curling up in bed next to your partner and your pets as you nap on a lazy Sunday afternoon can evoke feelings of contentment.
Suggestions for Incorporating It into Your Custom Home
So now that you know more about hygge, how can you go about adding it to your custom home design? Rethink the decor in your living room – plush furniture, fleece blankets, accent pillows, and piles of stuffed animals can all help, especially if you want to make your bedroom even more comfortable – but don’t leave out hidden nooks or other “cozy corners” dedicated to relaxation around your home. Light up some candles and watch the flames dance their merry little dance. Faux animal hides (or real, if you prefer) can also make the interior of your home feel more connected to nature – as can decorating with pine garlands, pinecones, wreaths, berries, twigs, and imitation snow – with Halloween almost here, you can start turning your attention towards Thanksgiving and Christmas!
