Avoid These Furniture Arrangement Mistakes in Your Custom Home

When it’s time to get down to that arranging, here are some common mistakes and tips for how to avoid making them in your custom home.

The best part of a custom home is that the whole space was designed precisely for you. It wasn’t someone else’s dream that you had to prod and pull into a shape you like. From the beams to the floorboards to the wallpaper to the floor plan, it is entirely you. Or, it will be once you have all of your beautiful furniture moved in and arranged exactly how you want it. When it’s time to get down to business, here are some common mistakes and tips for how to avoid making them in your custom home.

Make a Plan

The first mistake people make when arranging furniture in a new space is to dive in without any planning beforehand. It’s easy to think that once you have the furniture in there, you’ll be able to move it around until it fits how you want. This error will increase your workload and your stress. Instead, start by asking yourself questions about how you will use the space, such as how many people you hope to be able to seat or what activities will often take place in the space. Then plan the furniture around those needs. Don’t be afraid to sketch out your space or try online tools that help you plan it out.

Find the Focus

For each space, you’re going to want to have a focal point. This means  something you add to the room, like a painting, or a feature that naturally present, like a fireplace or window. Take a moment in each room to see what the eye is drawn to; arrange furniture around this focal point to produce a more comfortable space. If there is no natural focal point, create one with a piece of art, a bookshelf, or a plant.

Balance the Room

Try to avoid assembling all of the furniture on one side of the room, as this makes the whole space feel unbalanced. Sometimes this is hard, especially with rooms that have a natural walkway on one end rather than through the middle. Placing some furniture at an angle can help even out the feel of the room. Alternatively, if you have one large piece, like a grand piano, on one side of the room, it can even out the feel of all of the less prominent furniture being on the other side.

Put Comfort First

Remember that the point of your perfect custom home is to be a comfortable gathering place for friends and family. Don’t get so caught up in the tiny details of the furniture plan that you create a space that isn’t comfortable to relax in. If you don’t want to be there, neither will your family, and that beautiful, well-planned room will be an unfortunate waste of space.
