4 Tips on Building an In-Law Suite

In-law suites are a great way to expand your home out. Here are some tips.

An in-law suite is a great way to avoid something like a nursing home and also bring your family closer together. More and more homeowners are deciding to add in-law suites onto their home, but doing so is a massive project. We at Cedar Square Homes can help you build the perfect in-law suite that will let your parents enjoy life in the comfort they deserve. Read on for these tips to building the perfect suite!

Picking Locations

Depending on permits, you may be able to transform a garage or porch into a nice suite. If you’re looking to create an entirely new space, find an area along the first floor next to a room you don’t use often so you can create easy access. If you do end up converting two existing rooms, you may want to remove a wall and have a bigger living space as your in-law suite.

Separate Power

It could be a good idea to keep your addition on its own separate power, heat, and A/C source. If you ever repurpose the space and charge someone rent to live there, it could make things a lot easier as far as them paying the utility bill. Or, if the space is vacant, you can shut down the power to the suite entirely.

Check Your Septic Permit

If you have a septic tank, that means you also have a permit for it. Some septic tanks only allow for a maximum of three bathroom connections, so be sure to check your permit to see if you can add a bathroom. You may have to increase the size of your system to allow for the addition you truly want, so be prepared for that cost.

Check Building Codes

Building codes may end up limiting what you can do with your addition. Zoning rules might limit your addition to only having a bedroom, bath, sitting area, and kitchenette. You could get around this by making sure that the occupants can access the main kitchen but this might limit the use you can get in the future. If you add a full kitchen, it makes it an AUD–or affordable dwelling unit–which requires separate permits.
